Student habits helping the planet

Image
How the small things can make a difference Today in Grade 6 Science lesson we talked about the little yet so important things all students and their families can do to keep the planet healthy and clean. Below you see the good ideas and examples of students. Whenever I am with my mom I walk to school because our house is very close. We use wooden straws. We also collect bottles and put them in the recycle bin. Sometimes when I see trash on the ground I throw it away in the trash bin.   Me and my family go every year 4 times in the forest and clean  the part that belongs to us. Most of the time my grandpa and my and my cousins also help. Me and my family collect bottles and every year we recycle them and then we get money back.  And we also put BIOwaste in sink food crusher. It works like that you put BIOwaste and it chops it to pieces.  And everyday I come to school on a scooter. And everyday I come to school on a scooter. I don't really do this kind of stuff like I don't really

Reused and natural materials for supporting children´s creativity

Litter and waste are the topics of Eco-Schools programme at TIS during this academic year.  In our learning environment for 3-4 years old students , we also started to pay more attention to reusing and natural materials to supports children´s creativity and play skills .   There are many resources that were once meant for somethings else but can now be used for playing. We recommend to keep an eye on the secondhand market as children love playing with real life items and there are also many toys that look like new. For example, old (mobile) phones are very popular toys in our group. Although nowadays the phone on the photo is not familiar for the children from their homes anymore, they often “make" phone calls with mommies, daddies and each other. This cool phone is bought from the secondhand store Sõbralt Sõbrale. Our lovely wooden doll bed is also from the same store. Our “shop” and “kitchen” contain the leftovers from our homes - from the store it is possible to buy milk,

Sprouting mung beans in kindergarten

Sprouting mung beans As one of our Echo-School topics for this academic year is health and well-being, we often deal with the topic of healthy/unhealthy habits in our everyday lives. Last week we sprouted mung beans for ourselves. We started with observing the beans thoroughly (their color, size and the germ) and discussed what is needed for the beans to sprout (water, air) .  We used the scheme on the board to present the expected result and compare our the process with the pictures on the board.        Everyday twice a day children took turns, rinsed and drained the beans.       We used a special sprouting tray which made it easy to use it with the children and they could take care of the sprouts pretty independently. We kept the beans/sprouts on the table to keep an eye on them and every now and then children checked if the beans had grown a “tale” yet or not. Four days and the sprouts were ready to eat!   We have different nationalities in our kindergarten and group and it also
